In his introduction to a collection of works by Issam El Said which were auctioned at Bonhams (London) in April 2005, the artist Rashad Selim wrote: 'Like him vividly marked by Iraqi sensibility, deeply noble (not least) due to that rare humility; here are works from the hand of a life smoldering brilliantly with the contrasts of the Mesopotamian landscapes, her terrible frictions and profound peace, her bounty and her loss.  Beauty of spirit, art implies, can transcend tragedy in its search for corresponding matter to redeem.  There is a significant distinction to these paintings when seen against the sum of the artist's output;  Clearly touched by the physicality of Issam EL Said's nature the works have a personal quality. His characteristic generosity, warmth, spontaneity and insight can be seen here as if in person to those who knew him and the depth of his experience and struggle.'
